Warm apples, cinnamon, and tender French bread come together in this easy breakfast casserole. Prepare it for a leisurely weekend breakfast or serve it as part of your next fall brunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes
  • 3 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Maple syrup and powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced apples and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until slightly softened.
  3. Arrange the bread cubes in the prepared baking dish and scatter the cooked apples evenly over the top.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla, remaining cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and gently press the bread down to help it absorb the custard.
  6. Let stand for 15–20 minutes.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until golden brown and the center is set.
  8. Serve warm with powdered sugar and maple syrup.
