Warm apples, cinnamon, and tender French bread come together in this easy breakfast casserole. Prepare it for a leisurely weekend breakfast or serve it as part of your next fall brunch.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes
- 3 medium apples, peeled and diced
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp butter
- Maple syrup and powdered sugar for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced apples and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until slightly softened.
- Arrange the bread cubes in the prepared baking dish and scatter the cooked apples evenly over the top.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla, remaining cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and gently press the bread down to help it absorb the custard.
- Let stand for 15–20 minutes.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until golden brown and the center is set.
- Serve warm with powdered sugar and maple syrup.
